Each particle crash at the LHC involves numerous possible pathways in which various particles combine to generate the spray of debris that experimenters see. ... Each particle crash at the LHC involves many possible pathways in which different particles integrate to give rise to the spray of particles that experimenters see. In 2017, David Rousseau at IJCLab in Orsay, a member of the ATLAS cooperation, asked among his students, Aishik Ghosh, to enhance his groups ability to identify a specific pathway. That particular path is rather important considering that its utilized to measure properties of the Higgs boson, a particle (first measured in 2012) that assists discuss the mass of all other basic particles. It was a pretty big ask. When a grad student gets started in ATLAS, theyre a small cog in a giant, well-oiled device of 3,500 physicists, who all seem to understand exactly what theyre doing, stated Ghosh. The pathway Ghosh was asked to study occurs via several steps. Initially, the two clashing protons each give off a W boson, a particle associated with the weak nuclear force. These 2 bosons fuse together, changing their identity to form a Higgs boson. The Higgs boson then decomposes, forming a pair of Z bosons, another particle related to the weak force. Lastly, those Z bosons themselves each decay into a lepton, like an electron, and its antimatter partner, like a positron. A Feynman diagram for the pathway studied by Aishik Ghosh. Credit: ATLAS Measurements like the one Ghosh was studying are a crucial way of examining the properties of the Higgs boson. By exactly determining how long it takes the Higgs boson to decay, physicists might discover evidence of it interacting with new, undiscovered particles that are too enormous for the LHC to produce directly.Ghosh begun on the project, wanting to discover a small improvement in the collaborations well-tested methods. Instead, he noticed a larger problem. The goal he was provided, of discovering a single pathway by itself, didnt really make good sense.

MIT college student Alex Kachkine as soon as spent nine months thoroughly restoring a harmed baroque Italian painting, which left him plenty of time to question if innovation might speed things up. Recently, MIT News announced his option: a technique that utilizes AI-generated polymer movies to physically bring back damaged paintings in hours instead of months. The research appears in Nature.Kachkine's technique works by printing a transparent mask including thousands of precisely color-matched regions that conservators can apply straight to an original artwork. Unlike traditional repair, which permanently modifies the painting, these masks can reportedly be gotten rid of whenever needed. So it's a reversible procedure that does temporarily alter a painting. Because there's a digital record of what mask was utilized, in 100 years, the next time somebody is dealing with this, they'll have an incredibly clear understanding of what was done to the painting, Kachkine informed MIT News. And that's never really been possible in conservation before. Figure 1 from the paper. Credit: MIT Nature reports that up to 70 percent of institutional art collections stay hidden from public view due to damagea big amount of cultural heritage sitting hidden in storage. Traditional remediation methods, where conservators painstakingly fill harmed areas one at a time while mixing precise color matches for each region, can take weeks to decades for a single painting. It's knowledgeable work that needs both creative skill and deep technical knowledge, however there just aren't adequate conservators to take on the backlog. The mechanical engineering trainee conceived the concept throughout a 2021 cross-country drive to MIT, when gallery check outs exposed just how much art stays concealed due to damage and remediation backlogs. As someone who brings back paintings as a pastime, he understood both the issue and the capacity for a technological solution. To demonstrate his technique, Kachkine picked a difficult test case: a 15th-century oil painting needing repair work in 5,612 different areas. An AI design identified damage patterns and created 57,314 various colors to match the original work. The entire remediation process reportedly took 3.5 hoursabout 66 times faster than standard hand-painting methods. Alex Kachkine, who established the AI-printed movie strategy. Credit: MIT Notably, Kachkine prevented using generative AI designs like Stable Diffusion or the full-area application of generative adversarial networks (GANs) for the digital remediation action. According to the Nature paper, these designs cause spatial distortion that would avoid correct alignment in between the restored image and the harmed original.
